Members of the Rodeo Hercules Fire Protection District are wearing pink this month to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.    The United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County Local 1230 have joined with Susan G. Komen to raise money for breast cancer research. This will be the first year your local firefighters have decided to join in the fundraising efforts.

The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the U.S. for calendar year 2011 are over 250,000 new cases. In addition over 39,000 women will die from this disease. Of all women 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately 1 in 35 will die from it. This disease affects more of us than we realize, in fact 2100 MEN will be diagnosed in calendar year 2011. Over 450 of them will die this year from the disease. So you can see breast cancer is not just a women’s disease.

In support, your local firefighters will be switching from our traditional navy blue uniform tee shirts to PINK!

Together, we can help fund critical breast cancer research, as well as local education, screening and treatment programs that impact people in our community.

You can also support breast cancer research by donating online. It’s easy! Just go to www.passionatelypink.org (Susan G. Komen). Choose “Give to a Team” and type in “David Watson” (IAFF Team Capt. for Local 1230) and choose “Donate Now”.

Home Depot and its Hercules Home Depot employees provided funding and manpower to build a ‘Training Roof Prop’ at the Hercules Fire Station.  The training prop will be an integral part of our current training facility and will not only be used by Rodeo-Hercules firefighters but also to train reserve firefighters and firefighters in the surrounding communities.  The District expresses a sincere thank you to the Hercules Home Depot and to its employees who helped  make this  training aid possible.
